The Races – November 12th, 2005

When we first woke up on Saturday morning the weather was glum and we decided to postpone our planned day to the beach. We had been pondering the idea of going to ladies day at the Rosehill horse racing track for a few days and took advantage of the cloudy skies to make the decision for us. We arrived just before the first race, fully decked out in what we believed was appropriate racing attire. Myself in casual work attire and Laure in a nice skirt complete with a flower which I meticulously pinned in her hair. After guessing the winners of the first two races, we decided to put some money on the third. Needless to say from that point until we stopped putting small wages, neither Laure or I could pick a winning horse :(. Ironically enough when we had spent 20$ each we decided to call it quits and our lucky streak returned! Although it would have been nice to bask in the glory of a winning bet, Laure and I did have a fraction of a minute of excitement when we thought that we had one. We put a place bet on a horse that we had thought came in 3rd, unfortunately, when the official times came up our horse had been beaten at the line and finished in 4th place. For those of you unaware a Winning Bet is higher odds to bet the winner of the race, whereas a place bet is lower odds to choose a horse that finishes in the top 3. At least we got to share in some of the excitement of our roommates’ victories! That night our all of our roommates who happen to all be from the UK decided to go out for some drinks in Darling Harbor. Boy can the British and Scottish hold their alcohol! I staggered home after a long day of sun and inebriation and was out before my head hit the pillow.
Sunday was a day of recuperation and relaxation before another work week. I started reading Angels and Demons and have yet to put it down!
